The MFA program in Creative Writing at Manhattanville College will host an international conference aimed at bringing into dialogue key figures and debates in the fields of creative writing and critical pedagogy with the hope of establishing frameworks for the development of a critical creative writing pedagogy, i.e., a more committed (emancipatory) teaching praxis within the field of creative writing. The conference will be held June 21-22, 2013.
Individual papers, pre-formed panels, workshops, documentary films, and other works-in-progress are invited from scholars, educators, writers, artists, and activists on issues related to, but by no means limited by, the following:
• The Emancipation of Creativity
• Social Action, the Public Sphere, and Alternative Geographies for the Creative Writing Workshop
• Academic Critiques, Suppressed Histories, and “People’s Histories” of MFA, BA, Community College, K-12, and Community-based Creative Writing Workshops
• The Radical Workshop/Radicalization of the Creative Writing Workshop
• Toward a Critical Creative Writing Pedagogy of the Oppressed (cf. Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Theatre of the Oppressed, etc.)
• The Creative Writing Workshop and the Prison Industrial Complex
• Democratization, Transparency, and the Creative Writing Workshop
• Creative Writing Teachers as Cultural Workers
• Critical Pedagogy and Spoken Word
• Occupy Creative Writing
The deadline for proposals is passed.
Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by April 1, 2013. We are expecting to publish a volume of selected scholarly papers from this conference. Panelists will be asked to submit their revised papers by August 31, 2013 for consideration in this volume.
